First Aid Course
Overview
According to WorkSafe Victoria, the minimum acceptable level of training for first aid officers for workplaces is the senior first aid certificate (often referred to as a level 2 first aid certificate) or its competency based equivalent. This course is designed to meet that requirement.
Why complete this First Aid Course?
Section 21 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic.) requires that employers provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, adequate facilities for the welfare of employees at any workplace under the management and control of the employer.
According to WorkSafe Victoria, the number of first aiders and training needs will vary between workplaces. As a general rule, persons designated as first aid officers will need to have undertaken training leading to a Senior First Aid certificate (Level 2 certificate).
Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guideline 10.1 states that “those trained in CPR should refresh their CPR skills at least annually”. It is generally accepted that individuals should refresh their first aid qualification on a 3 yearly basis (in addition to refreshing CPR annually).

- Applicants who are currently employed or who have recent work experience are preferred

Course Details
First Aid Course Assignment:
Upon booking, WAM Training will provide a First Aid Course Assignment which must be completed prior to the commencement of face-to-face training.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
In order to enrol into this First Aid Course, Trainees need to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work by themselves and as part of a team with some accountability of their own work areas in defined and routine tasks. Applicants must have sufficient reading, writing, verbal communication and numeracy skills in English to enable them to safely administer first aid in the workplace. Refer to the descriptions below:
- Read and apply basic first aid information such as DRSABCD charts
- Whilst good writing skills can make completing this course easier, it is not necessary to be able to write in order to enrol
- A basic understanding of timing so that compressions and breaths can be delivered properly whilst administering CPR
- Speak clearly and unambiguously in English
- Explain, describe and verify sometimes complex first aid needs and issues
- Verbal assessments may be conducted for the multiple-choice test

What is the First Aid Course outcome?
Once competence is achieved, trainees will be issued with a First Aid Course Statement of Attainment (Nationally Accredited).
Additional First Aid Course Information
- A maximum of 14 trainees can attend this course
- Trainees are required to wear enclosed shoes
- For identification, trainees should bring a driver’s licence or passport
- This course is delivered over 1 day face-to-face with a blend of classroom-based and practical activities
- All trainees will be forwarded the First Aid Course Handbook upon making a booking. WAM Training requires that all trainees study the First Aid Course Handbook prior to the commencement of face-to-face training
- In addition, WAM Training will provide a First Aid Course Assignment which must be completed prior to the commencement of face-to-face training
What does the First Aid Course assessment involve?
- Trainees will be assessed using the first aid Pre-Course Worksheet described above, an in-class multiple-choice test and a first aid practical assessment involving the demonstration of various first aid techniques
- Verbal assessments may be conducted for the multiple-choice test
- Verbal assessments must be conducted one-on-one, there is a possibility that verbal assessments may need to be postponed to a mutually agreeable date and time

How often should FA training be refreshed?
First Aid training should be refreshed every 3 years, and you should also refresh your CPR training annually.
I have bad knees - Can I do my practical assessment standing up using a table?
No, the unit requires that the CPR assessments are performed on the ground.
What if I don't complete my homework?
Trainees who haven’t completed their compulsory homework will not be permitted to attend the course and their course fees will be forfeited.
