Course Details

The Working at Heights Course uses a blend of classroom-based and practical activities to teach the content required to meet the nationally recognised ‘RIIWHS204E – Work Safely At Heights’ Unit of Competency.

This course is suitable for people who have not done any previous working at heights training, and also as a working at heights refresher course to suit the ongoing reassessment requirements of Australian Standard 1891: Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices

The course is delivered in-person over one day, and covers the following subjects:

  • Identifying and assessing fall hazards
  • Conducting risk assessments
  • Implementing control measures
  • Harness inspection, fitting and use.

After receiving instruction, trainees will undergo a  practical assessment involving the use of height safety equipment, as well as completing a short-answer test. Verbal assessments are not conducted for this course.

Once competence in working safely at heights is achieved, trainees will receive a Statement of Attainment and Proof of Training Card.

Working at Heights Training attendees must be a minimum of 18 years of age (identification will be required).

A maximum body weight of 120kg applies, to meet the maximum capacity of our facility’s fall protection system.

Having some experience working at heights is preferred, but not mandatory.

Attendees must also meet the language, literacy and numeracy requirements outlined below.

Trainees must have adequate English language skills to safely complete tasks, such as being able to:

  • Read and correctly interpret safe work method statements and height safety equipment specifications;
  • Complete required documentation, including completing risk assessments;
  • Speak English clearly in order to explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues.

If a trainee is concerned that they may not have the capabilities described above, please contact WAM Training on 1800 143 343 for advice.

The Working at Heights Course is delivered at our purpose-built training facility in Laverton North. This state-of-the-art facility provides a realistic work environment, allowing for effective hands-on training.

The Working at Heights Course may also be delivered on-site at client premises, providing the work area meets certain criteria. The area must have rated and within-test-date anchorage points and must require persons accessing the area to wear a harness.

To confirm whether on-site training can be accommodated, please send through your policies and procedures covering how the particular area is accessed, when you make an on-site enquiry. A few photos of the area will also be helpful.

Trainees should wear safety shoes , and must bring a driver’s licence or passport for identification purposes.

A Working Safely at Heights Course Handbook will be provided upon making a booking, and trainees are expected to have read this prior to training.

All necessary equipment is supplied.

A maximum of 12 participants can attend the course at any one time.

For on-site training, the client must provide their policies, procedures and risk assessment relating to the work area. This is to ensure safety for the trainer and trainees, and so that the trainer is familiar with the client’s business processes. That way, where there are differences between client processes and the course content, these can be resolved prior to course commencement.

This is a proper course. No doing the assessment copying answers from your book. In saying that the way Lindsay explains everything and gives you tips on how to operate a forklift especially for me the first time on a forklift you have nothing to fear. Doing the pracs & test with Gary: he puts you at ease and explains everything well so you are not under pressure while doing them.

I got my fork lift licence through wam training. The fella running the class Lindsey is up there with some of the funniest people I have met. His course coverage was in depth and thorough. He is straight to the point and informative. It's worth getting your licence just to here the blokes banter. If this guy wasn't teaching people how to drive forks he could probably do stand up. Staff from entry to your exits, they treat people with respect, free fruits basket to grab, men and women alike, were professionals and polite. The trainers were clear and helpful, tries to make course less boring (though the materials were still boring, but hey, it's in our DNA). Brings in lunch orders by staff, seen female students doing the courses which was cool and not one-sided. All in all, I got two tickets from them and the staffs were not simply there for a paycheck. For the employers, your workers, if they have ears and half of a brain of a 10 year old with a calculator, they can pass.
