Course Overview
WAM Training’s one day Working at Heights Course provides essential height safety information and practical training around assessing fall hazards, implementing risk control measures and using harnesses and other safety equipment to perform work tasks at heights.
Australian Standard AS1891.4 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Selection, use and maintenance states that each person performing harness-based work must complete nationally recognised height safety training. This course helps to meet this requirement, and also contributes towards employers meeting their legislative obligations to provide adequate levels of information, instruction, training and supervision in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic.).

Who can enrol into our Working at Heights Course?
To be eligible to enrol into our Working at Heights Course, you must:
- Be a minimum 18 years of age
- Have a valid USI (you can create one for free or look yours up at www.usi.gov.au)
- Weigh no more than 120kg (this is the limit of our fall arrest systems)
- Not be fearful of heights
Experience working with safety paperwork is preferred, but not essential.
It’s important that you’re able to speak English clearly and be able to understand and complete worksite documentation relevant to working at heights. Additionally, many of our courses involve practical tasks which require the physical capability to operate machinery, climb ladders, handle tools, perform manual handling and move within confined, elevated or awkward spaces. Working At Heights Course structure
Throughout this course, our expert Trainers will guide you through both theoretical and practical training to help you build the knowledge and hands-on skills required for the workplace. You’ll also complete both theoretical and practical assessments to demonstrate your competence.
Language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills requirements
Trainees must be able to speak English clearly, understand and complete worksite documentation and explain and describe issues relating to height safety.
Our expert Trainers will guide and support you throughout the learning process. However, please note that the formal assessments are closed-book.
To give you an idea of the language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills required, here are five example questions similar in complexity to what you’ll encounter during the course:
- List four faults that would make a safety harness unsafe to use
- Explain why height safety equipment must be inspected both before and after use
- You are required to access a roof using a ladder. List three safety precautions to ensure the ladder is used correctly
- How often should harnesses, ropes and slings be tagged according to AS1891.4?
- You are working at height using a fall arrest system. What should you do if the weather changes and it begins to rain heavily?

I did my Dogging course here and this is honestly one of the best facilities with the best trainers and course content I’ve ever experienced. I’ve done 3 high risk licenses all at different places and WAM has set the standards very high. I will be doing all my courses with them in future. This is a proper course. No doing the assessment copying answers from your book. In saying that the way Lindsay explains everything and gives you tips on how to operate a forklift especially for me the first time on a forklift you have nothing to fear. Doing the pracs & test with Gary: he puts you at ease and explains everything well so you are not under pressure while doing them.

I have just completed my forklift license course and I am so happy with the training I received. My trainer Steve was brilliant, he was thorough and took the time to ensure all of us passed our assessment. Even when WorkSafe showed up unannounced to do their inspections, they walked out looking very pleased indeed! An exemplary training facility with high standards regarding health and safety. I did the electrical spotters course. Staff were very friendly, awesome place. They even have a thing where you can order lunch from a QR code and get it delivered to your table. My assessor was great. Would recommend it to anyone looking at booking some training.

There is definitely something new to learn with WAM training and the trainers are very much focussed into making us trainees fully aware of the subject. I would highly recommend WAM training to anyone interested. Definitely coming back.

I got my fork lift licence through wam training. The fella running the class Lindsey is up there with some of the funniest people I have met. His course coverage was in depth and thorough. He is straight to the point and informative. It's worth getting your licence just to here the blokes banter. If this guy wasn't teaching people how to drive forks he could probably do stand up. Thanks and take care big fella.

Best training Centre. Recently did my first aid course here. Very knowledgeable instructor, brand new set up. Staff are friendly and ample car parking available. Training facility is modern, have a small Cafe for snacks and vending machine.

Forklift training course was extremely informative and well presented. Instructor Lindsay was able to deliver all the information, both practical and theory, in a way that was easy to understand. Left feeling completely competent and would come back again!

Staff from entry to your exits, they treat people with respect, free fruits basket to grab, men and women alike, were professionals and polite. The trainers were clear and helpful, tries to make course less boring (though the materials were still boring, but hey, it's in our DNA). Brings in lunch orders by staff, seen female students doing the courses which was cool and not one-sided. All in all, I got two tickets from them and the staffs were not simply there for a paycheck. For the employers, your workers, if they have ears and half of a brain of a 10 year old with a calculator, they can pass.

I paid for and completed my level II first aid course basic life support and CPR for the incredible price of $97.50 and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Great value great customer satisfaction and I had a brilliant instructor named Stone. He was easy going patient and his knowledge & professionalism were outstanding. I would highly recommend WAM training to anyone.

I have just completed the forklift licence at WAM with Lindsay as our trainer. He was hilarious, keeping the course fun and enjoyable throughout so it wasn’t boring, while teaching and explaining the course content well which made it easy to pass all 3 assessments. Would definitely recommend WAM for all your training needs.

The WAM training facility is a new facility with large, clean training rooms and good facilities.The instructor for the First Aid Course (Paul) was extremely knowledgeable and happy to elaborate on topics if the need arose.Very happy with the course and would definitely recommend.

Excellent training facility with great staff and equipment. The classrooms and site in general is modern. The training was excellent as was the practice on the forklift. Location is good as well. How often does the Working at Heights Course need to be redone?
Most businesses that work with WAM Training have their staff recomplete their Working at Heights Course every 2 years.
Australian Standard AS1891.4 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Selection, use and maintenance states that Persons should be reassessed, at appropriate intervals, to confirm ongoing competency relevant to their tasks associated with working in a fall risk environment… So, what does that mean?
It means that retraining should be something which is planned for at an interval which takes into account the risk associated with the tasks being undertaken.
Ultimately, it is up to the employer to set a policy on how often they will retrain their staff in height safety.
Does this Working at Heights Course include rescue training?
Whilst we will discuss the need to plan for rescue (I.e. ensuring that we consider any areas that rescue might be needed and that the means of rescue is readily available), WAM Training’s Working at Heights Course is not considered to be sufficient to train rescuers.
What is the cost of WAM Training's Working at Heights Course?
Our Working at Heights Course fee is $240 (GST Exempt) per person.
What type of certification is issued after completing a Working at Heights Course?
Upon successful completion of our Working at Heights Course, Trainees will be issued with a Proof of Training Card as well as a Statement of Attainment validating their skills and knowledge.
How long is the Working at Heights Course?
WAM Training’s Working at Heights Course takes one day, from 7:45am to 4:00pm. As soon as you make your booking, you’ll receive our Working at Heights Course Handbook which we recommend you study before attending.
Does anyone ever fail the Working at Heights Course?
More often than not, when someone fails WAM Training’s Working at Heights Course, it’s due to not paying attention. Our highly experienced Trainers have worked with hundreds, if not thousands of Trainees to help them become competent height safety operators. But at the end of the day, it’s up to you to pay attention and participate during your Working at Heights Course.
