Vehicle Loading Crane Course

1 Day – 7:45am to 4:00pm

This course is suitable for anyone who operates a vehicle loading crane with a capacity of less than 10 metre tonnes) in a workplace. The metre tonnage of a crane can be found by multiplying the crane radius by the lifting capacity.

This course is only ever conducted for group bookings on employers’ sites.

Additional Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age

Why Complete this Vehicle Loading Crane Course?

Section 21 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic.) requires that employers provide an adequate level of information, instruction, training and supervision to employees to enable them to work safely.

Proof of competency is required to operate all vehicle loading cranes. This course is designed to meet that requirement. In cases where the vehicle loading crane has a capacity of 10 metre tonnes or greater, a High Risk Work Licence (Class CV) is required (please note that this course is not for a Class CV High Risk Work Licence).

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Requirements

In order to enrol into this Vehicle Loading Crane Course, Trainees need to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work by themselves and as part of a team with some accountability of their own work areas in defined and routine tasks. Applicants must have sufficient reading, writing, verbal communication and numeracy skills in English to enable them to safely complete tasks relating to vehicle loading crane operation. Refer to the descriptions below.

Reading:

  • Read and correctly interpret safe work method statements, crane specifications and load charts

Writing:

  • Complete required documentation relevant to vehicle loading crane operation, including completing risk assessments and logbook entries

Numeracy:

  • Ensure that the safe working load of the vehicle loading crane isn’t exceeded

Verbal Communication:

  • Speak clearly and unambiguously in English
  • Explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues

Verbal assessments will not be conducted for this course

What is the Vehicle Loading Crane Course Outcome?

Once competence is achieved, trainees will receive a Statement of Attainment (Nationally Accredited) and Proof of Training Card.

How many trainees can attend the course?

  • A maximum of 6 trainees are permitted

What should trainees wear?

  • Trainees are required to wear safety shoes and hi-visibility clothing (WAM Training can provide a hi-visibility safety vest if required)

What should trainees bring?

  • Trainees must bring a passport or an Australian driver’s licence
  • Contact WAM Training on 1800 143 343 if you do not have one of the forms of ID listed above

Do trainees need to study?

  • Yes – All trainees will be forwarded the Course Handbook upon making a booking.  WAM Training requires that all trainees study the Course Handbook prior to the commencement of face-to-face training

How is the assessment conducted?

  • Trainees will be assessed using a short-answer test and a practical assessment involving the operation of a vehicle loading crane to shift loads
  • Verbal assessments will not be conducted for this course (please refer to the Language, Literacy and Numeracy requirements outlined above)

What equipment needs to be supplied?

  • The customer is required to supply a vehicle loading crane with a capacity of less than 10 metre tonnes, loads to shift to and from the truck and suitable lifting equipment
  • Crane and lifting equipment must be suitably compliant (crane to have operator manual, logbook, service records and load chart, lifting equipment to be in a suitable condition and currently tagged)

Is a High Risk Work Licence (Class CV – Vehicle Loading Crane) required?

  • In cases where the vehicle loading crane has a capacity of 10 metre tonnes or greater, a High Risk Work Licence (Class CV) is required (please note that this course is not for a Class CV High Risk Work Licence)

Is a Dogging Licence also required?

  • Part 3.6 and Schedule 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (Vic.) outline the requirement to hold a High Risk Work Licence if conducting dogging work, which is defined as one or both of the following:

    • The application of slinging techniques, including the selection or inspection of lifting gear, to sling a load
    • The directing of a crane or hoist operator in the movement of a load when the load is out of the operator’s view
  • Further, slinging techniques are defined as: “those slinging techniques that require the exercise of judgment in relation to the suitability and condition of lifting gear, and the method of slinging, by consideration of the nature of the load, its mass and its centre of gravity”.
