Course Overview
WAM Training’s half-day Main to Meter Course is designed to equip your team with the skills and knowledge needed to work on metallic pipes within the water network safely. Electrocution whilst working on metallic pipes (such as when replacing water meters) is always a possibility, and that’s why EnergySafe Victoria strongly recommends the use of an Abnormal Voltage Detection Device (AVDD) and bonding straps whilst works are underway.
The Main to Meter Course closely covers the correct use of Abnormal Voltage Detection Devices (AVDDs) and bonding straps and provides a detailed understanding of just how important it is to use this equipment properly.
What Unit of Competency is covered during the Main to Meter Course?

Main to Meter Course structure
Throughout this course, our expert Trainers will guide you through both theoretical and practical training to help you build the knowledge and hands-on skills required for the workplace. You’ll also complete both theoretical and practical assessments to demonstrate your competence.
Key benefits of Main To Meter training
Abnormal Voltage Detection Devices (AVDDs) and bonding cables are often used incorrectly, or not used at all. This exposes the team to the risk of electrocution – something that needs to be taken seriously. By scheduling your personnel to attend a Main to Meter Course, you can ensure that they are well-versed in AVDD usage.
Language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills requirements
Trainees must be able to speak English clearly, understand and complete worksite documentation and explain and describe issues relating to working on metallic pipes connected to the water network.
Our expert Trainers will guide and support you throughout the learning process. However, please note that the formal assessments are closed-book.
To give you an idea of the language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills required, here are five example questions similar in complexity to what you’ll encounter during the course:
- List three ways to locate the correct Standard Operating Procedures or Risk Assessment documents for your worksite
- Why is it important to ask the customer to switch off their main power supply before starting work on the service line?
- Match the following faults to their correct definitions: Service neutral fault, Neutral fault in customer installation, Supply neutral fault
- List three pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) required when working on metallic pipes, and explain their purpose
- If the Abnormal Voltage Detection Device (AVDD) alarms during work, what steps should you take and who should be notified?
If you’re not sure whether your Language, Literacy, Numeracy or Digital Literacy skills are suitable for this course, please contact WAM Training by calling 1800 143 343 so that we can provide you with a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Assessment to help determine your readiness.
