Overview

This course is suitable for anyone who has been elected as a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) and is looking to upgrade their skills, knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety framework and the rights and responsibilities held by HSRs.

Why complete this HSR Initial OHS Training Course?

Section 67 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic.) requires that employers allow their Health and Safety Representatives (HRSs) to attend a HSR Initial OHS Training Course as chosen by the HSR. This WorkSafe-Approved course is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding of the OHS framework and the role of HSRs in creating and promoting safe and healthy workplaces.

  • Interpreting the OHS legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR

  • Participating in consultation and issue resolution 
  • Representing designated work group members in any OHS risk management process undertaken by the appropriate duty holder(s)
  • Issuing Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and directing cessation of work

Course Details

Whilst WorkSafe Victoria allows up to 20 participants per course, WAM Training has a maximum group size of 15 so as to allow plenty of time for groupwork, discussions and a comfortable Trainer-to-Participant ratio.

For the HSR Initial OHS Training Course, participants must have adequate English language skills, literacy and numeracy skills, such as being able to:

  • Read and interpret legislation, policies and procedures
  • Complete workplace paperwork such as forms and notices
  • Speak English in order to participate in group activities and consultation

Provided that all five days have been attended and participated in, participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance to verify their new skills and knowledge.

  • Under s67 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic.), Victorian Employers are legally obligated to allow their Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy Health and Safety Representatives (DHSRs) to attend training (provided the course start date is at least 14 days in the future), and must pay the course fees and their HSRs’ regular wages whilst they attend their course
  • Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy Health and Safety Representatives (DHSRs) are entitled to choose their course in consultation with their employer
  • This course is delivered over 5 days face-to-face and is classroom-based
  • Participants should wear enclosed shoes
  • For identification, participants should bring a driver’s licence or passport
