Breathing Apparatus Course structure
Throughout this course, our expert Trainers will guide you through both theoretical and practical training to help you build the knowledge and hands-on skills required for the workplace. You’ll also complete both theoretical and practical assessments to demonstrate your competence.
Language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills requirements
Trainees must be able to speak English clearly, understand and complete worksite documentation and explain and describe issues relating to breathing apparatus use.
Our expert Trainers will guide and support you throughout the learning process. However, please note that the formal assessments are closed-book.
To give you an idea of the language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills required, here are five example questions similar in complexity to what you’ll encounter during the course:
- Explain why breathing apparatus should be inspected before use and what should be done if damage is found
- List two types of communication that can be used between an entrant and a Breathing Apparatus Control Officer (BACO)
- List three potential consequences of breathing in air that contains low oxygen or toxic gases
- Calculate the working duration of a breathing apparatus cylinder with a size of 6L, a pressure of 200 Bar, and a consumption rate of 40L/min. Show your workings
- Describe the steps you would take after removing your breathing apparatus at the end of the task

WAM Training offers four courses relevant to confined space entry, so that you can choose the right course to suit your workplace:

- Advanced Confined Space Entry Course – This course delves deeper into each of the confined space subjects and the Units of Competency issued to successful applicants meet the requirements of many Water Boards.
- Confined Space Refresher Course – This course is for individuals who have already completed nationally recognised confined space entry in the past, and are looking to refresh their skills to maintain training compliance with Australian Standard AS2865 Confined spaces.

If you’re not sure about what course best suits your needs, please contact us here or call 1800 143 343.
Most businesses that work with WAM Training have their staff recomplete their Breathing Apparatus Course every 1-2 years.
If using breathing apparaus in confined spaces, it is important to know that Australian Standard AS2865 Confined spaces states that Persons shall be reassessed at appropriate intervals to ensure their ongoing competency to perform activities relevant to their entry and work associated with confined spaces.
Essentially, that means that retraining should be something which is planned for at an interval which takes into account the risk associated with the tasks being undertaken.
Ultimately, it is up to the employer to set a policy on how often they will retrain their staff in the use of breathing apparatus.
Our Breathing Apparatus Course fee is $400 (GST Exempt) per person.
Upon successful completion of our Breathing Apparatus Course, Trainees will be issued with a Statement of Attainment validating their skills and knowledge.
WAM Training’s Breathing Apparatus Course takes around 6 hours, from 7:45am to 2:00pm. As soon as you make your booking, you’ll receive our Breathing Apparatus Course Handbook which we recommend you study before attending.
More often than not, when someone fails WAM Training’s Breathing Apparatus Course, it’s due to not paying attention. Our highly experienced Trainers have worked with hundreds, if not thousands of Trainees to help them become competent in the use of breathing apparatus. But at the end of the day, it’s up to you to pay attention and participate during your Breathing Apparatus Course.
