WHO should complete confined space entry (Refresher) training?

Anyone who already has a Nationally Accredited confined space entry training qualification and continues to work or supervise confined space entry on a worksite in Australia.

WHY do you need confined space refresher training?

The Law:
Section 21 of the OHS Act 2004 (Vic.) requires that employers provide an adequate level of information, instruction, training and supervision to employees to enable them to work safely.

Australian Standards:
‘AS2865-2009 Confined spaces’ states:

2.6.1 Training and competency assessment
The requirements for training and assessment of competency are as follows:
a) All persons with tasks associated with a confined space shall be trained and assessed as competent to conduct those tasks
b) Persons shall be reassessed at appropriate intervals to maintain their competency to conduct tasks associated with confined spaces.

WHAT is covered in confined space entry refresher training?

This training course is designed to reconfirm the competency of a trainee who has already completed a confined space entry competency. Refresher training is required annually as per industry expectations.

During the course trainees will receive revision of confined space theory and re-enter a confined space to reconfirm competence. Important confined space subject that are revised include:

  • How to identify a confined space
  • How to recognise hazards associated with working in confined spaces
  • How to establish safe systems for entry and working in confined spaces
  • Confined space entry best practice to reduce risks
  • How to test the atmosphere of a confined space to ensure it is safe to enter
  • How to use breathing apparatus
  • Confined space risk assessment, entry permits and safe work method statements

  • Enclosed shoes and hi-visibility clothing are required
  • WAM Training can provide a hi-visibility safety vest for courses on our site


Trainees will be assessed using a short-answer written test, incorporating a Safe Work Method Statement, and a practical assessment involving the entering of a confined space according to permits, using gas testing equipment and breathing apparatus.


Once competence is achieved, trainees will receive a Statement of Achievement and Proof of Training Card (Non-accredited)

Language, literacy & numeracy:

Trainees need to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required and numeracy to work by themselves and as part of a team with some accountability of their own work areas in defined and routine tasks. Applicants must have sufficient speaking, reading, writing and numeracy skills in English to enable them to:

  • Speak clearly and unambiguously in English
  • Read and correctly interpret and complete required documentation relevant to confined space entry, including producing required reports
  • Read and correctly interpret complex piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues
  • Understand permit requirements
  • Differentiate results regarding pressures, temperatures, voltages, masses and gas levels, and interpret the results as being safe/not safe, and determine the required actions
  • Numeracy is required to enable the determination of the available working time from a breathing apparatus set

Health note:

The training and assessment may involve working at heights and entering confined spaces involving bending, crawling, and light to medium lifting. Please refer to ‘Student Health Form’ for further advice.
