What is a White Card (Construction Induction)?

Prior to 1 July, 2008, there was a course known as a Victorian Construction Industry Basic Induction Course which was introduced as the original concept of providing all construction workers with the basic level of knowledge to maintain their safety on a construction site.

This course resulted in you receiving a card as evidence of successful completion and was colloquially known as a “Red Card” in Victoria.  This course was not nationally accredited and was somewhat unregulated.

The Construction Induction card as we know it today is aligned with a national unit of competence CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.  The Construction Induction Card also known as the “White Card” is now the modern replacement.

Overview of the White Card

Anyone who performs construction work or works on any construction site in Australia, must hold a valid Construction Induction Card.

Upon successful completion of your Construction Induction Training course your training provider will notify Worksafe of your results, triggering the production and postage of your new Construction Induction Card.

How Do White Cards Work?

Put simply, if you work on a construction site or perform construction work you must have a Construction Induction Card.   Any construction site can request to see your Construction Induction Card and have the right to not let you work, until evidence of completing a Construction Induction course can be provided.

Employers in Australia must ensure that any person conducting construction work holds a Construction Induction Card. In Victoria the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017, Part 5.1, Regulation 341. outlines significant fines for an individual and/or companies who perform construction work without holding a valid Construction Induction card.

State-Specific Requirements for White Cards

Although each state and territory has their own occupational health and safety acts, they are very similar.   All of them contain a requirement for anyone performing construction work or working on a construction site, must have completed a Construction Induction course and received a Construction Induction card as evidence.

How Long Does a White Card Last?

A Construction Induction Card (White CArd) does not expire if you continue to perform construction work or work on a construction site.  However, regulation 349 of the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 states that if any Construction Induction Card holder does not perform construction work during a consecutive 2 years, the Construction Induction card lapses.
