Is Fire Warden Training Mandatory?

Australian Standard 3745 Planning for emergencies in facilities requires the Emergency Planning Committee of your building / facility to determine how many Fire Wardens per occupant are to be allocated and trained.

Industry standards indicate that for every 20 occupants you require two trained Fire Wardens.  The 2nd Fire Warden is allocated as a backup if the first Fire Warden takes leave.

Legal Requirements for Fire Warden Training

  • Knowing your duties and responsibilities as a Fire Wardens
  • Implementing emergency management processes
  • Rehearsing emergency procedures
  • Conducting post-emergency debriefing

How Often Should Fire Warden Training be Refreshed?

As per Australian Standard 3745 Planning for emergencies in facilities, it is recommended that Fire Wardens undergo retraining every 2 years to maintain compliance.

However, you should always check to see if your Employer has a policy outlining your internal refresher training requirements.

How to Become a Certified Fire Warden

To be considered qualified to Fire Warden you need to complete the Unit of Competency PUAFER005 Operate as part of an emergency control organization.

If delivered as a stand alone unit the WAM Training Fire Warden Course will run for 4 hours.
