Telehanders and Non Slewing Mobile Cranes
There are two types of Training / Licencing required to operate Non-Slewing Mobile Cranes. These are:
Usage of Over 3t Non Slewing Mobile Cranes (Telehandlers), requires operators to obtain the WorkSafe licence Class CN – Non Slewing Mobile Crane Operation (>3 Tonnes)
Usage of 3t and Under Non Slewing Mobile Cranes (Telehandlers) do not require a WorkSafe licence to operate. However, In line with employer obligations under section 21 of the OH&S Act, employers have a legal responsibility to provide instruction and training on equipment their employees are required to use. Proof of training covers elements of an employer’s duty of care under the OH&S Act. One day of the course is dedicated to satisfying this requirement. In the training we cover the equipment’s operations, Safe Work Method Statements, Hazard Identification and Hazard Control. Participants are required to demonstrate competence in both theory and practical aspects of Non Slewing crane operation

Hi Steve,
A forklift licence (class code LF) does not cover the use of a Telehandler, over or under 3 tonne. A telehandler is a non-slewing mobile crane. A Licence to Perform High Risk Work, class code CN, is required for a telehandler with a SWL of over 3 tonne. If the SWL of the telehandler is 3 tonne or less a Licence to Perform High Risk Work is not required, however the employer must ensure that the operator has received adequate training, supervision and instruction in the equipment.
The Alert titled Cranes - Certificate Requirements for Telescoping Boom Cranes may assist you further in understanding the licensing requirements for telehandlers.Should you have any further queries or issues, feel free to contact the WorkSafe Advisory Service on 1800136089 or 0396411444 or visit us on the web at http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au.
