To Ensure Worker Safety Confined Space Entry Training is Needed
In construction work it is sometimes necessary to have a worker enter a space that is tight. In those instances the worker must have confined space entry training. This training usually has four basic parts to the curriculum; Entering the Confined Space; Operating a Breathing Apparatus; Working in Accordance with the Permit; and Gas Testing the Atmosphere. Workers that have not completed a confined space entry training course are not eligible to enter areas that have limited access. A confined space is one that is large enough to allow the worker entry and to allow them to perform the needed task, but with limited entry and exit access. Sites that might require confined space entry training include tanks, silos, vaults, pits and more. To ensure that workers are up to date on the safety requirements of those working conditions a confined space entry training course is needed.
Workers will learn how to safely enter a confined space and work within the limited area. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that working conditions are safe and remain safe for the duration of the job. In many cases hot work, or work that can cause sparks, is needed in confined entry situations. In those circumstances the area must be cleared as a non-flammable jobsite before work can proceed. Confined space entry training requires workers to be fully informed as to the regulations regarding their work. They need to be able to communicate effectively and respond with a cool head in case of an emergency.
